The year 2022 marked a proud milestone for NLT Group with the successful completion of the salinity intrusion monitoring and warning system in Long An. Each completed project is a source of great joy for the NLT Group team. The monitoring systems and solution products developed by NLT Group are built on AI, IoT, GIS, and Cloud platforms, bringing practical benefits to modern life and contributing more broadly to the national digital transformation journey.

The salinity intrusion situation in Long An province

In recent years, drought and salinity intrusion have arrived earlier and penetrated deeper inland in the Mekong Delta, with increasingly complex developments. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, during the dry season of 2019–2020, the Mekong Delta experienced an alarming level of salinity intrusion – the most severe in recorded history. The serious consequences of salinity intrusion have greatly affected residents’ livelihoods as well as agricultural production activities. Some notable impacts include:

  • Pest and disease outbreaks caused by salinity intrusion

  • Shortages of domestic water supply due to salinity intrusion

Mr. Pham Tan Dao – Chief of Office of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Soc Trang Province – stated: “By late February 2022, salinity levels measured at stations along several rivers and canals in Tran De District, Long Phu District, and Ke Sach District (Soc Trang Province) ranged from 2.5 to over 18.4%. Moreover, seawater continues to intrude deeper inland and remain longer in canals, causing significant difficulties for residents in obtaining water for production and daily living.”

Facing these challenges, the agricultural sector needs multiple response strategies, including water storage, strengthening irrigation works, and accelerating winter–spring crop schedules to avoid severe salinity intrusion.

In response to this situation, NLT Group has developed and mastered a salinity intrusion monitoring and warning system, providing environmental quality monitoring indicators to support managers in assessing salinity levels and planning appropriate responses to ongoing saltwater intrusion. The system has now been installed in multiple localities across Long An Province, including Thanh Hoa District, Duc Hoa District, Thu Thua District, and Ben Luc District, among others.

Based on data collected from monitoring stations, managers and residents can easily update information and plan adaptive responses to environmental quality changes through mobile applications and websites. The salinity intrusion monitoring and warning system developed by NLT Group is particularly suitable for Long An Province and the Mekong Delta in general, where water levels fluctuate significantly on a daily basis and salinity concentrations change frequently.

The NLT Group salinity intrusion monitoring and warning system is developed on an IoT-based platform, continuously updating real-time data to support fast and accurate computational models. This enables managers to issue immediate warnings while also generating forecasts for future scenarios based on model results.

  • Simple operation requiring minimal time and human resources while delivering fast and effective results

  • Centralized storage of all monitoring data (images, parameters, timestamps, monitoring locations) on a central server

  • System operation via Internet, 3G/4G/5G networks, or LAN/WiFi

  • Anytime, anywhere monitoring through intuitive GIS-based digital maps on Web and Mobile App

The salinity intrusion monitoring and warning system of NLT Group is expected to meet the needs of the Long An Department of Irrigation in environmental quality monitoring and supervision. Currently, the system is regularly maintained by NLT Group’s engineering team to keep pace with the alarming rate of salinity intrusion in the area.
