On the morning of 23/04, the commissioning ceremony to put into operation the waste transfer station in Thanh Xuan Ward, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City took place. The project was implemented by NLT Group in coordination with other units, with the goal of gradually modernising waste collection and transport processes and minimising impacts on the environment and urban aesthetics. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City generates about 9,700 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day, with the annual growth rate of waste volume at approximately 6–10%. The average daily municipal waste volume per capita in Ho Chi Minh City is about 0.98 kg/person/day. The rapid increase in urban MSW, with diverse and complex characteristics and composition, has become a major pressure on authorities as well as collection, transport and treatment units. Although 100% of Ho Chi Minh City’s MSW is collected and treated, in recent times, during the process of waste consolidation at transfer stations before being transported to central treatment facilities, secondary pollution has arisen in the form of odours and leachate. In order to resolve the situation of transfer stations causing environmental pollution, and to renovate, upgrade and newly build stations that meet technical requirements, NLT Group has developed a design concept for a waste transfer station in which the waste reception area and vehicle waiting area are fully enclosed.

These transfer stations all use modern waste compaction technology. Leachate is collected into a channel and directed to a pre-treatment facility to meet standards before being sent on to the wastewater treatment plant. At the same time, an odour extraction system is designed to capture all odours generated from the wastewater treatment system. In addition, to enhance functionality at the stations, NLT Group has equipped key modern technological systems such as AI camera systems, electronic weighing stations, sludge dewatering machines, wastewater treatment systems and our smart environmental technology ecosystem. These do not only improve urban sanitation quality but also ensure environmental protection, traffic safety on urban routes and the health and living conditions of local residents.

According to Chairman Bui Huu Phu – Chairman of NLT Group, this station is equipped with advanced compaction systems and devices such as mist spraying odour control, exhaust extraction and filtration systems, on-site wastewater treatment, a weighing station and AI camera systems for 24/7 monitoring. Each day, the station can compact from 150 to 200 tons of municipal waste. With this modern equipment, the compaction station will help gradually eliminate open-air waste gathering points that cause environmental pollution. Especially from the very first days of operation, surveillance cameras have been installed at the weighing station area and the entrance and exit. This helps local authorities and management units easily monitor waste collection vehicles entering and leaving the station and the volume of waste received, facilitating quick handling of arising issues. At the same time, it helps ensure that waste transport vehicles operate according to the prescribed schedule, thereby reducing traffic congestion when entering and exiting the station. Thus, the waste transfer station is an optimal solution to the current challenge of “mechanising waste collection and transport” in major urban areas in Vietnam and around the world. When this transfer station model operates successfully, both the city and its residents gain two simultaneous benefits: economic and environmental.

NLT Group installs a flood monitoring and warning system in Can Tho City

On October 09, 2023, NLT Group deployed the installation of a flood monitoring and warning system for Can Tho City with the goal of contributing to improving the quality of state environmental management in the locality. The system not only provides flood warnings but also supports specialized agencies and local authorities in monitoring and assessing conditions to serve flood prevention and response efforts.

Can Tho is one of the provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta that has been heavily affected by tidal flooding as well as the impacts of climate change in recent years. In recent times, central roads in Can Tho City have frequently experienced severe flooding during tidal peaks. The highest water level ever recorded was 2.27 meters, occurring on the evening of October 12, 2022, exceeding Alert Level III by 0.27 meters.

According to statistics, the central area of Can Tho City has 61 main roads flooded to depths ranging from 0.4 to 0.5 meters. Districts such as Binh Thuy, Cai Rang, and O Mon also have many roads deeply submerged. Roads that are repeatedly flooded during rainfall or tidal surges include Nguyen Van Cu (from the foot of Con Khuong Bridge to the intersection with Cach Mang Thang Tam Street), Mau Than, Tran Hung Dao, Ly Tu Trong, Huynh Cuong and others.

According to the Department of Transport of Can Tho City, the city currently has almost no street flood monitoring system. Flood monitoring work still has to be carried out manually. When heavy rain, floods, or tidal surges occur, staff must be stationed at flooded locations to record information such as the start and end time of flooding and measure the maximum water depth on streets. Flood information must then wait for reports to be sent back to the center, causing delays in flood response efforts and significantly affecting the daily lives of residents in flooded areas.

To address these challenges, NLT Group coordinated with relevant departments and agencies to pilot the installation of flood monitoring and prevention stations in Binh Thuy District, Ninh Kieu District, and other areas of Can Tho City. These locations were selected because they are flood-prone hotspots. The equipment includes a water level sensor, a camera to check actual conditions, and a warning signal light.

As a result, instead of manual measurements as before, this smart system makes flood warning and forecasting much easier. More importantly, the information is not only delivered to flood control agencies but also to the public through a flood warning application. In addition to knowing the current flood situation, users can also view forecasts for the next 30–60 minutes, allowing them to choose appropriate traffic routes.

On the morning of 31/1/2023, NLT Group officially commenced the construction project of the leachate wastewater treatment plant at the municipal solid waste landfill in Hoa Phu – belonging to Buon Ma Thuot City. The objective of the project is to collect and treat domestic wastewater in the Buon Ma Thuot City area to improve the quality of life for residents, strengthen community health in the area, contribute to protecting river water sources, ensure urban aesthetics, and maintain environmental sanitation.

The wastewater treatment plant promises to bring benefits in preserving the natural ecosystem

Vietnam currently has about 755 urban areas, with rapid population growth and urbanization. The issue is that the living environment is declining due to the inability to control generated waste sources. Waste treatment has become a pressing issue, especially municipal solid waste. Meanwhile, urban municipal solid waste treatment is mainly landfill disposal, with the proportion of waste landfilled in large cities such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City accounting for 80% – 90%. Therefore, treating the leachate overflow situation at Hoa Phu landfill is necessary to reduce surrounding environmental pollution, and to address according to the petition submitted by households with land in the affected area.

Leachate wastewater is a type of wastewater generated in waste landfill sites, formed due to rainwater seepage leaking into the landfill body or due to the inherent moisture of the buried waste. Because it is generated from waste, this wastewater is very harmful, containing many pollutants such as nitrogen gas, ammonia, heavy metals, pathogenic germs and bacteria, high BOD, COD concentrations… and can cause serious environmental pollution. If it infiltrates the soil, it will severely contaminate groundwater sources, and if it flows into canals, it will destroy the aquatic environment in that area. Therefore, it is very necessary to thoroughly treat leachate wastewater before discharge into the environment

After studying the project in practice and the requirements provided by the investor. NLT Group will use the most optimal leachate treatment technology for the plant.

Description of the technology process used in the leachate wastewater treatment plant

Leachate passes through a coarse filtration process to remove large solids before being transferred into the collection tank. Here, the leachate is stabilized before entering the next treatment stages.
The wastewater is then fed into the equalization tank to perform the aeration process. This helps reduce wastewater concentration and prevent odor generation caused by anaerobic reactions.
After the equalization tank, the wastewater is pumped into the physico chemical tank, where physico chemical stage 1 and stage 2 processes are carried out. This process includes coagulation and flocculation to significantly reduce the concentration of suspended solids, BOD and COD in the water.
At the physico chemical settling tank, the sludge is separated and transferred to the landfill.
The water after sludge separation from the physico chemical settling tank meets the influent standard of the RO system, then is filtered under high pressure. This filtration process removes most minerals, solids, impurities, bacteria, and viruses, retaining only clean water.
Sludge from the RO system is also transferred to the landfill.
Clean water after the RO process meets the regulated discharge standards. It can be reused for various purposes. Before use, the water can be disinfected if necessary.

In July 2022, NLT Group coordinated with Yasuda Group – a leading Japanese contractor – to focus intensively and urgently deploy 21 flood monitoring and warning points for Ho Chi Minh City caused by heavy rain and tidal surges. In August 2020, Nam Long Technology Investment Group (NLT Group) completed the installation of a garbage truck weighbridge within the An Phu Dong enclosed waste compaction station (District 12) – as part of a series of activities celebrating the 6th District 12 Party Congress, term 2020–2025.
The An Phu Dong waste compaction station project was commenced in December 2019. This project is one of the key works in addressing waste treatment in the district. The garbage compaction equipment area has a construction area of nearly 590m², within a total campus area of 1,500m², with 2 garbage compactors with a capacity of 200 tons/day. This is one of the projects applying modern enclosed waste compaction technology, equipped with a deodorization system using EM biological preparations sprayed directly at the garbage compactor inlet. The air inside the station is treated through a filtration and activated carbon deodorization system before being discharged into the environment.
